·Watermelon extract shows blood pressure benefits: Human data
Florida State University, June 5, (Nutraingredients)
Daily supplements of a watermelon extract may help reduce moderately elevated blood pressure in obese middle-aged adults, suggests a new study.
The extract, a rich source of the amino acids l-citrulline and l-arginine, was associated with reductions in systolic and diastolic blood pressure in the arm of 15.1 and 7.6 mmHg, respectively .
Researchers from Florida State University also report similar reductions in blood pressure measured in the ankle, but no changes were recorded in heart rate.
The study used a dose of 6 grams per day and the benefits to both systolic and diastolic blood pressure may be dose-dependent.
Umbrella review affirms vitamin D supports endothelial function
Hangzhou Medical College (China), June 23 2025 (Life Extension).
A review of 16 meta-analyses of clinical trials concluded that vitamin D significantly improved two important measures of endothelial function.
Endothelial function refers to the functioning of the inner lining of the arteries (endothelium), which becomes dysfunctional in people with cardiovascular disease. One of the endothelium's roles is the production of nitric oxide that aids in the relaxation of blood vessels and supports healthy blood flow within the arteries. Poor endothelial function leads to diminished nitric oxide production, oxidative stress and other adverse effects.
The umbrella review included data from 16 meta-analyses that included a total of 22,891 men women who participated in randomized, controlled trials that evaluated the association between adding vitamin D to the diet and pulse-wave velocity, flow-mediated dilation and/or augmentation index, which are measurements used to evaluate endothelial function. The highest dose of vitamin D evaluated in the trials was equal to 5,447.2 IU per day.
The analysis determined that vitamin D significantly improved flow mediated dilation and significantly (but modestly) improved pulse wave velocity. Chen and associates suggested that vitamin D may influence vascular health by promoting nitric oxide production, supporting a healthy inflammatory response, regulating calcium and vascular smooth muscle tone, influencing the renin-angiotensin system that regulates blood pressure, and directly affecting vascular cells.
How fructose increases the risk of inflammation
University of Vienna (Austria), June 24, 2025 (Eurekalert)
A research group led by Ina Bergheim from the Department of Nutritional Sciences at the University of Vienna has now been able to prove for the first time that monocytes, important immune cells in the blood, react more strongly to bacterial toxins after fructose consumption - but not in a positive way. Specifically, the concentration of receptors for certain bacterial toxins increases, making the body more susceptible to inflammation.
In two independent randomised studies with healthy adults, the researchers investigated how the consumption of fructose-sweetened beverages affects the immune response compared to beverages with glucose. In addition, they conducted experiments with isolated monocytes and cell culture models to investigate the molecular mechanisms.
The scientists were able to observe that the intake of fructose, in contrast to the intake of glucose, led to an increase in the concentration of Toll-like receptor 2 in monocytes. Toll-like receptor 2 regulates the immune response, among other things. The higher concentration was accompanied by an increased sensitivity of the monocytes to lipoteichoic acid, a bacterial toxin. The concentration of receptors for such toxins in the body increased, which means that the inflammatory response increased. Specifically, pro-inflammatory messengers such as interleukin-6, interleukin-1β and tumour necrosis factor-alpha were increasingly released.
These findings make an important contribution to understanding how individual food components and fructose in particular can influence the immune system.
Recipe for Mellow Rice Salad
Yield: 2 servings
Dressing:
2 tablespoons walnut oil
1 tablespoon raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar
1 clove garlic, pressed
Sea salt to taste
½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Pinch cayenne
Salad:
1 cup brown rice, cooked
½ cup pecans, chopped
2 tablespoons fresh dill, chopped
1 yellow bell pepper, diced
1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
1 scallion, chopped finely
Whisk oil, vinegar, garlic, salt, pepper, and cayenne together in a small bowl.
Place brown rice, pecans, dill, yellow bell pepper, tomato and scallion in a salad bowl and toss the salad with the dressing.
Cherry tomatoes are a rich source of vitamin C, vitamin A and vitamin K… and they are fun and super easy to grow, even in pots on a terrace garden.
